In Conversation with Bryony Fripp

Bryony is another new illustrator at Lipstick. Known for her blending of traditional drawing techniques with digital colouring and textures, she produces work focused on mark-making and whimsical storytelling. We caught up with her to find out about her life in the studio and her journey as an illustrator.

How would you describe your style of illustration?

I hand draw all of my line work then digitally colour, holding onto that watercolour, textured feeling and painterly magic. I love merging both worlds of techniques, losing myself in the intricate details along the way.

Do you think that having your studio in Brighton provides you with inspiration? How so?

Moving near the sea was the best decision I ever made. As my life shifted, so did my work, but in the most beautiful way. There's nothing that calms me more than being by the sea. The instant freedom and joy I feel has translated into my work, attracting the most wonderful creatively free briefs and inspired lots of personal pieces.

What would be your go-to snack whilst working in the studio?

Such a snack girl… I have an obsession with dates & peanut butter, or an apple with a nibble of cheese.

Have you always been an artistic person? What other subjects did you love as a child?

As a little girl, my world revolved around drawing Disney characters. It was then that I knew drawing and creating was all I ever wanted to do. Alongside this, I was fascinated by Psychology, drawn to understanding both the human form and the complexities of our minds.

What are your ambitions as an illustrator?

I have endless ambitions to fulfill which is why this job is the gift that keeps on giving. I would love to capture culinary delights within a cook book , map out more wonderful worlds and see my creations adorn fabrics in various forms to name just a few.

What does Bryony love…

Early mornings indulging in croissants, a red wine whilst life drawing, sunsets with a side of Margaritas, Manifesting under the moon, Sound baths & Bubble baths.
